40 Days Fast
Fasting Scriptures from The Bible
There are many passages in The Bible referring to fasting, often to 40 days
and nights including Moses before delivering the Ten Commandments and Jesus
Christ
27
And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of
these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.
28 And he was there with the LORD forty
days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote
upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
Moses (Exodus 34:27,28)
5
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways:
now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king
to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
Samuel (1 Samuel 8:5,6)
1
Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and
teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene,
and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and
fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work
whereunto I have called them. 3 And when
they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
14
But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went
into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.
15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers
of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any
word of exhortation for the people, say on. 16
Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye
that fear God, give audience. 17 The God
of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they
dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them
out of it. 18 And about the time of
forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness.
19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of
Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot. 20
And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and
fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. 21
And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis,
a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.
22 And when he had removed him, he
raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their
testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own
heart, which shall fulfil all my will. 23
Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a
Saviour, Jesus:
Christians (Acts 13:1-3;
14:23)
1
It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children
of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat
to battle. 2 Then there came some that
told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from
beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which
is Engedi. 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and
set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah
Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20:1-3)
18
And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and
say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy
disciples fast not?
John's disciples (Mark 2:18)
4
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and
mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
1
Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were
assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.
2 And the seed of Israel separated
themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the
iniquities of their fathers. 3 And they
stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God
one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and
worshipped the LORD their God.
Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:4; 9:1-3)
27
In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in
fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
Paul (2 Corinthians 11:27)
5
So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on
sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6 For word came unto the king of
Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and
covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree
of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock,
taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry
mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from
the violence that is in their hands. 9
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger,
that we perish not? 10 And God saw their
works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil,
that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
Ninevites (Jonah 3:5-10)
4
But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much
patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in
watchings, in fastings;
Apostles (2 Corinthians 6:4,5)
26
Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto
the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day
until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
Israelites (Judges 20:26)
16
David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and
lay all night upon the earth
David (2 Samuel 12:16)
9
Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went
into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he
kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before
his God, as he did aforetime. 11 Then
these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before
his God. 12 Then they came near, and
spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a
decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within
thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The
king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes
and Persians, which altereth not. 13
Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the
children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree
that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
14 Then the king, when he heard these
words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to
deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.
15 Then these men assembled unto the
king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and
Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be
changed. 16 Then the king commanded, and
they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake
and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver
thee. 17 And a stone was brought, and
laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet,
and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed
concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went
to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of
musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.
Darius (Daniel 6:9,18)
36
And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of
Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from
her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of
about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served
God with fastings and prayers night and day.
Anna (Luke 2:36, 37)
21
Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict
ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our
little ones, and for all our substance. 22
For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to
help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king,
saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his
power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.
23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was
intreated of us.
Ezra (Ezra 8:21-23)
1
When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put
on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried
with a loud and a bitter cry; 2 And came
even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed
with sackcloth. 3 And in every province,
whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great
mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay
in sackcloth and ashes. 4 So Esther's
maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen
exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away
his sackcloth from him: but he received it not. 5
Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had
appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know
what it was, and why it was. 6 So Hatach
went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the
king's gate. 7 And Mordecai told him of
all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had
promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.
8 Also he gave him the copy of the
writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it
unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go
in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before
him for her people. 9 And Hatach came
and told Esther the words of Mordecai. 10
Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11 All the king's servants, and the
people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or women,
shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one
law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out
the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in
unto the king these thirty days. 12 And
they told to Mordecai Esther's words. 13
Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou
shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.
14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time,
then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another
place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth
whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
15 Then Esther bade them return Mordecai
this answer, 16 Go, gather together all
the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor
drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and
so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I
perish, I perish. 17 So Mordecai went
his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him
Esther (Esther 4)
1
Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the
devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty
days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred
Jesus (Matthew 4:1,2)
8
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat
forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
Elijah (1 Kings 19:8)
3
And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with
fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes
Daniel (Daniel 9:3)

many benefits of fasting when done God's way.
Isaiah Chapter 58 - The Fasting Chapter
1
Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people
their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a
nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God:
they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to
God. 3 Wherefore have we fasted, say
they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou
takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and
exact all your labours. 4 Behold, ye
fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall
not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen?
a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and
an acceptable day to the LORD? 6 Is not
this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo
the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every
yoke? 7 Is it not to deal thy bread to
the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when
thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from
thine own flesh? 8 Then shall thy light
break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and
thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy
rereward. 9 Then shalt thou call, and
the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou
take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger,
and speaking vanity; 10 And if thou draw
out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy
light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:
11 And the LORD shall guide thee
continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou
shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail
not. 12 And they that shall be of thee
shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many
generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The
restorer of paths to dwell in. 13 If
thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy
day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and
shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure,
nor speaking thine own words: 14 Then
shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the
high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father:
for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
